Reception
At St.Winefride’s, we work together to give every child a secure foundation to be able to succeed as life-long learners by fostering a love of learning. We provide our children with the best learning experiences based on children’s interests whenever possible in order to foster a love of learning. We support our children to achieve their full potential as they continue to develop their thinking, skills, curiosity and attitudes to be able to conquer future challenges they may face within our ever-changing world. At St Winefrides we are keen to support children’s personal, social and emotional development.
We aim to create a warm, happy, secure, fun and inviting learning environment which promotes diversity through celebrating differences. This is a priority so all children feel safe, secure, comfortable, confident, ready to learn and are respectful of all. We promote high expectations for each individual child and encourage them to be independent learners by learning to make choices, share and cooperate in order to become enthused, inspired, intuitive and autonomous learners.
Furthermore, within our Early Years setting, we focus particularly on developing childrens ability to communicate effectively, interact positively, and acquire a wide vocabulary. As well as this we ensure that all strong foundations of early reading and phonic skills have been established.

Our Early Years Curriculum at St Winefride’s has been designed to nurture an environment that encourages children to play, share and interact with others enabling them to develop into confident, thoughtful and independent learners. This is achieved through a combination of play-based learning and focused adult led sessions which develop the children’s knowledge, vocabulary and skills. It is fundamental that we acknowledge the variety of ways in which children learn through The Characteristics of Effective Learning which are essential within the Early Years Curriculum. We aim to provide a variety of different learning experiences in order to expand children’s knowledge ,vocabulary and skills further; to facilitate this development children learn through playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically. Children capture, repeat and consolidate their learning within a stimulating environment with high quality adult interactions. We promote great attitudes to learning through our high expectations.

Daily Routine
A typical day in Reception consists of Collective Worship, Daily Phonics, Reading, Literacy, Maths and independent challenges which are related to the specified topic and children’s interests. We also have an RE afternoon once per week and two PE lessons. We have numerous Areas of Provision available both inside and outside which are varied and enhanced to support our experiences and learning. Areas of provision include Mark-Making, Writing, Creative, Phonics, Maths, Loose Parts, Funky Fingers, Malleable, Water, Sand, Painting, Building, Constructing, Home Corner, Role-Play, Small World and Reading Areas which enable all children opportunities to access the full Early Years Curriculum.

Tapestry
In both Nursery and Reception, we are using Tapestry to 'capture' our children's learning. Tapestry is an easy-to-use online learning journal which helps school and parents/carers to record, track and celebrate children's progress in early years education. Parents/Carers can also upload photographs and videos onto Tapestry so that we can see all of the wonderful learning they do from home.
Log on to see your child's profile - photos, videos and written comments and don't forget to add your own - we love to see what our children are doing at home too!
Please download the Tapestry app. Fill in the Tapestry agreement and give it to the office and we will quickly get you set up with an account so that you can access your child's learning journey and contribute from home.
Talking with your child
Research shows speaking, listening, and understanding are central to every aspect of our lives. A child’s later educational success stems from their ability to express their needs, learn how the world works and communicate with others. These websites show short simple videos, such as when to introduce new vocabulary or how to have engaging back and forth conversation with your child.

Phonics
What is Phonics?
Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing.
It develops a child’s ability to hear, recognise and use the sounds within words.
Learners are also taught the correspondence between sounds and the graphemes (spelling patterns) that represent them.
Children will also be taught other skills, such as whole-word recognition, book skills and a love and enjoyment of reading. The below document is a helpful guide to support your child!
